We pursue to become an international referent for health tourism; which, in addition, would allow us to position the island of Tenerife as a medical destination of excellence. Marta Belén González, Managing Director at MBestcare.

Her educational training and her experience working in Health Management for more than a decade has given her a broad view and understanding of the health field. Those years allowed her to know precisely where and how to find the best health services which offer the highest quality care and hospital excellence.

She has a degree in Economic Science by the Universidad de La Laguna, specializing in Hospital Management and Health Economics. Her “obsession” with always offering high-quality management has turned her into the “perpetual student”, as she has been combining her professional activity with improving and expanding her knowledge. During her ongoing training, she earned a Master’s Degree in Health Economics and Health Management at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and took the DSIS Executive Education (Integrated Healthcare Services Management Programme) at the ESADE Business School in Madrid. She also completed the PADE Executive Management Programme (High Management Programme) at the IESE Business School in Madrid. Besides, her relationship with the academic world also includes teaching at the Universidad Europea de Canarias for the Master’s Degree in Business Management –MBA.

Regarding her professional career in health management, she started her career at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Tenerife where she spent 8 years as the Financial Director until 2009. After that, at the end of 2010 she started working at the USP La Colina Hospital as Managing Director. A year after her appointment she was offered the task of managing the
USP Costa Adeje Hospital and thus she became Managing Director of the two hospitals of the company in Tenerife. When the hospitals were acquired by the Quirón Hospital Group, she continued filling those positions until September 2014. At that time, she decided to start
her own project: she created MBestcare, the company where she could put her broad knowledge in the health field into use through the management, coordination and search of the best medical teams, always with the main goal of meeting the real needs of the patients through excellence in all aspects.

Iriana Espárrago, medical coordinator. Specialist in family and community medicine.

She earned her degree from the Universidad de La Laguna with an excellent academic record. Her clear health-oriented vocation is reflected in all her professional career. She has held numerous positions and has even selflessly cooperated with the NGO Doctors of the World. She is also very involved in the education sector as she is constantly ongoing training,
updating her knowledge and techniques. She has for instance completed the Master’s Degree in Chronic Care Management in Primary Health Care from the IL3-UB-COMTFSEMFYC. In addition, it is worth mentioning that she is also a trainer and she participates in radio programmes related to the health field, among many other collaborations. She is currently a specialist at the Chronic and Home Care Service of the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, a member of the SOCAMFYC (semFyC) and of the Communication and Health working group, member of the Semergen and of the Echography working group; and member of the SEHAD (Spanish Society of Home Hospitalization).

María Rodríguez, Public Relations at Mbestcare.

Degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She started her professional career in the newspaper El País, but her empathy and humanitarian concern soon led her to develop her professional career in the health sector, where the direct contact with patients allowed her to get to know their needs and the best way to meet those needs.

The creation of MBestcare was inspired by the origins of tourism in Tenerife. We need to go back to the end of the 19 th century, when thousands of Europeans started to take advantage of the benefits of water and the sea breeze, as well as the climate, in order to alleviate or cure rheumatic, skin and, above all, respiratory diseases.

William Anderson, doctor, naturalist and prestigious surgeon already highlighted in his time the therapeutic advantages of our climate: “the air and the climate are notably healthy and particularly appropriate to alleviate diseases such as tuberculosis”; and he also recommended his colleagues to send their patients to our islands, due to the constancy of
our temperatures and the mildness of our climate.

Another doctor who acknowledged the health benefits of the Fortunate Islands in his writings was John White: “the climate in Tenerife is nice and healthy. I don’t know any better for the convalescence of the sick”. In addition, those who want to live here can choose the temperature they like best due to the mountainous nature of the island.
